Pharmacotherapy
Tobacco use should be approached as a chronic relapsing condition--the average smoker makes four to seven attempts before successfully quitting tobacco use. A combination of more than one form of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or a combination of NRT and medication can increase long-term quit rates.
NRT options include a nicotine patch, gum, lozenge, oral inhaler, and nasal spray. Medications include Bupropion SR (Zyban) and Varenicline (Chantix).
